This is an image by artist, Blake Shell, from her Skins series. The images she has derived to create these new images are from the video game SIMS. She has stretched and manipulated the characters to create abstracted forms. Even though the form is now abstracted, familiar aspects to the SIMS characters remain. Her other works use and react to the apparatus as well. New New Topographics, and Cut and Paste, are two of her bodies of work that use derived images to create new images. Like a photograph her work replicates the apparatus through materializing glimpses to her view of the world. She does not use a camera to create images, yet her images still carry a photographic quality. Her source materials are the Internet, video games, movies and images already recorded into the archive. This is part of the evolution of photography. What is a camera? A computer is a form of a camera. Both a camera and a computer appropriate information from the apparatus.
